It’s not all about the beach.
Sure, you’re here to go to the beach and who comes to Destin without visiting Crab Island? But there’s more to this part of the world than white sand and blue water. A lot more. We’re going to point you north and maybe a little bit west or east to some other options within an hour of Destin.
Emerald Coast Zoo
This family bought a zoo and it’s grown in the years since they took over. Check it out!
Visit the springs
Springs are everywhere in Northwest Florida. At 70 degrees year-round, they are cool and clear blue. Some even have underwater caves. Ponce de Leon State Park and Morrison Springs are both within an hour’s drive of Destin.
Turkey Creek
Just over the bridge in Niceville, you’ll find a mile long boardwalk stretching past a tannin-stained creek with a white sand bottom. You can swim there but watch out for the current. This creek is on the move. You might see some of Florida’s native residents – snakes, alligators, and turtles.
Emerald Coast Wildlife Refuge
While we’re enjoying the beaches and creatures, they’re saving them. This is where orphaned or injured squirrels, possums, hawks and other creatures go for life-saving care. Meet their animal ambassadors, who are full-time residents of this amazing shelter.
Visit Museums & Memorial Parks
We are surrounded by the most powerful military bases in the country. With that there are numerous museums and memorial parks for you to visit. Check the local Chamber of Commerce directories for a list and hours of operation.
